As with all protective helmets they have to be certified fit for purpose. The standards in common use are:

Snell – RS-98

European – CEN 1077

American Society of Testing and Materials – ASTM F2040

The Snell Memorial Foundation produce the most stringent ski/snowboard helmet standard in the world. By certifying that a helmet meets one or more of these standards it ensures that the helmet has been tested in a variety of situations including moisture and temperature variations with differing impacts. The retention of the helmet in paramount to its operation in case of a fall or collision and so the fit and chin strap are tested to ensure suitability.

These standards will help you to select the best snowboarding helmet for you. So ensure you look out for the identifying marks before you make your purchase.

Note: all helments need to be replaced after an impact to ensure that they will perform to a given standard and protect your head the next time.
